About

Nicholas Alexander

I know life  can be chaotic and full of day to day struggles.  Most of the time we can deal with these situations ourselves or with help from our family and friends, however there are times when we feel alone and  have difficulty coping and at these times counselling  may be helpful. It can provide an opportunity for us to focus on a specific problem like bereavement,  work related stress,  a relationship or perhaps this is a pivotal point in your life involving a major decision, crisis or conflict.  I will help you to make sense of how you are feeling,  to make sense of what's happening in your life right now and help you to make the changes you want.

All kinds of issues can be talked through in a safe, totally confidential and non-judgemental setting with my support as a professional. Talking to trained listener is often refreshing, gives new perspectives and usually opens up a new lease of life… Often there are things we don’t want to discuss with anyone we know . Existential crises for example come from the fact we live a short life and how are to make the most of that time ?

I believe we can only talk with complete honesty in true anonymity.

In a comfortable and informal setting I offer both short-term counselling and longer-term psychotherapy, for individuals and couples. It is also possible for me to travel. Special arrangement and work with distant and international clients can be arranged via Skype.

I am interested in treating the people I see holistically which has developed  my working relationship with integrative and functional medicine over the last 10 years. I am an integrated therapist working psychotherapeutically, similar to the way functional medicine works to integrate medicine for the body.

I would say my work certainly fulfils and supports in depth the modifiable personal lifestyle factors in  functional medicine models. The work deals in detail with the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. I believe these impact the body and can lead to clinical imbalances such as structural integrity, energy, assimilation mentally, emotionally and physically. In therapy I  see these propelled by defences, projections and numerous other psychological and emotional mechanisms.

I’m integrated because I find working in a singular modality unhelpful. In integrating a number of psychotherapeutic approaches and models, I see the advantage of being able to fully support the highly individual and diverse needs of the client. Through  this way of working it can change session to session and moment to moment depending on what the client is bringing and the blocks they have.

I work with traditional  psychoanalytic practices as well as humanistic and person centred approaches together with CBT to combat Negative Automatic Thoughts and schemas. I also employ Transactional Analysis , Gestalt and  Gendlin into my work.

I have seen this way of working support many patients who are being treated through functional medicine. Both therapeutic approaches, in counselling and psychotherapy and the medical side in the functional medicine matrix  seem to support and cross pollinate each other.

I have worked for CRI, the countries largest drug and alcohol addiction agency as well as working in depth with bereavement for Cruse Bereavement Care. Currently I’m working with youth development (11-25 year olds) for local authorities and in private practice in Mayfair, Harley Street, EC1 and Twickenham, where a large body of my work is with abuse, addiction, bereavement,  family therapy, couples and relationships.
